Favourites: a few of the books we love
We stumbled across this beautiful large-format book in the Italian language section of Foyles. A meditation on the 'biggest little thing', happiness, and where it can be found, by Italian born Beatrice Alemagna, one of my new favourite illustrators.
I love the subtlety of the colours (a contrast to some of our brighter picks) in the mixed media illustrations and Mister G will listen to a good three quarters of it before insisting on turning the page to the end (which isn't bad by our current measure).
From a little digging, it appears that this title is available only in Italian and French, but Alemagna has illustrated several other children's books available in English (check out her website here). She's also illustrated Aldous Huxley's children's story, The Crows of Pearblossom (although I can only seem to find it in French).
Love it.

She is an amazing illustrator. I have lots of her books all in French, all I can't read. My favourite is a lion in Paris, I read it to Stanley and make it up....
ReplyDeleteHer stuff is a breath of fresh air amongst a lot of the crap out there...
I'd never come across her before (I guess because, unfortunately, so little of her work is available in English) but I'm a big fan now.
Deleteand I'm glad I'm not the only one who buys books for the kiddo that I can't understand! (PA reads this one. It turns out that children's books are about the right level for my italian. Mostly. I only understand about one word in ten of the french ones I've bought though;)
I'm excited for your new book!
